Norfolk Veterans Home
The Norfolk Veterans Home provides our area veterans with outstanding care in a beautiful, home-like atmosphere. In addition to quality medical care, the home offers a library, canteen, beauty and barber shop, recreation room and other amenities. However, members don’t have a park or outdoor space where they can spend time with family and friends, go for a walk or just enjoy being outside. For that reason, the Heroes Park Foundation was formed with a goal of creating Heroes Park — an eight-acre green space behind the home that will provide covered picnic areas, wheelchair-friendly walking paths, outdoor games, gardens and much more.
The goal is to create a park that will not only benefit the many World War II and Korean War veterans who now live at the home, but also veterans from more recent conflicts, many of whom are dealing with lifechanging injuries and may one day need the services of the Norfolk Veterans Home. The park will also include a flag pavilion that will recognize the different branches of the military.
The cost of building the park and flag pavilion is $2,500,000 which includes $300,000 for an endowment fund to cover maintenance. Our goal is to begin construction in spring 2012.
